International Paper Is Fined
Release
Date: July 4, 1991
The International Paper Company was fined
$2.2 million today after pleading guilty in
Federal District Court to criminal charges
of illegally storing hazardous waste
solvents and falsifying records at its paper
mill in Jay, Me.
A Federal judge imposed the fine as part of
the plea agreement. International Paper
faced fines of up to $2.5 million.
The company admitted to storing the
materials without a permit from 1986 to
1988. The solvents, used to clean equipment,
were later mixed with oil and burned in the
mill's boilers.
The fine was the second-largest ever for
violation of Federal hazardous waste rules,
the United States Attorney for Maine,
Richard Cohen, said. The largest fine, $3.1
million, was levied earlier this year
against the United Technologies Corporation.
